The PCM/TCM randomly monitors memory checksum by performing a self-test. These tests are implemented to verify that all of the vehicle software operational calculations are operating properly. If the test fails due to incorrect checksum, the PCM/TCM determines there is a checksum value error.
When the PCM/TCM detects internal operation checksum error or ROM/DATA is illegally modified or reprogramed, the PCM/TCM sets DTC P0601.
