P0553 Power Steering Pressure Sensor/Switch Circuit High input

COMPONENT LOCATION

GENERAL DESCRIPTION
To reduce the required power to manipulate steering wheel, hydraulic pressure is used in power steering system. A load is sensed at steering oil pressure sensor then inputted to ECM as a wheel position signal. Controlling idle speed valve, ECM performs appropriate electric load correction With this signal.
DTC DESCRIPTION
Checking output signals from P/S PS(power steering pressure sensor) every 2.5 sec. under detecting condition, if an signal above 4.95V lasts for more than 1.25 sec., ECM sets P0553. MIL(Malfunction Indicatin Lamp) turns on when the malfunction lasts till consecutive 2 driving cycles.

MONITOR GDS DATA
1.
Connect GDS to Data Link Connector(DLC).
2.
IG “ON”.
3.
Select “DTC” button, and then Press “DTC Status” to check DTC’s information from the DTCs menu.
4.
Read “DTC Status” parameter.

5.
Is parameter displayed “Present fault”?

img

▶ Go to “Terminal and Connector inspection” procedure.

img

▶ Fault is intermittent caused by poor contact in the sensor’s and/or ECM’s connector or was repaired and ECM memory was not cleared. Thoroughly check connectors for looseness, poor connection, ending, corrosion, contamination, deterioration, or damage. Repair or replace as necessary
TERMINAL AND CONNECTOR INSPECTION
1.
Many malfunctions in the electrical system are caused by poor harness and terminals. Faults can also be caused by interference from other electrical systems, and mechanical or chemical damage..
2.
Thoroughly check connectors for looseness, poor connection, bending, corrosion, contamination, deterioration, or damage.
3.
Has a problem been found?

img

▶ Repair as necessary and go to “Verification of Vehicle Repair” procedure

img

▶ Go to ” Power Circuit Inspection ” procedure.

POWER CIRCUIT INSPECTION
■ Check voltage
1.
IG “OFF” and disconnect the P/S pressure sensor connector.
2.
IG “ON”
3.
Measure the voltage between power terminal of P/S pressure sensor harness connector and chassis ground.
 Approx. 5V

img

4.
Is the measured voltage within specification ?

img

▶ Go to “Ground Circuit Inspection” procedure.

img

▶ Repair open or short to ground in harness and go to “Verification of Vehicle Repair” procedure.

GROUND CIRCUIT INSPECTION
■ Check open in harness
1.
IG “OFF” and disconnect the A/C pressure sensor connector.
2.
IG “ON”
3.
Measure the voltage between power terminal of A/C pressure sensor harness connector and chassis ground.(Measurement “A”)
4.
Measure the voltage between power and ground terminals of A/C pressure sensor harness connector.(Measurement “B”)
The Difference between “A” and “B” is below 200mV.

▶ Repair as necessary and go to “Verification of Vehicle Repair” procedure.

SIGNAL CIRCUIT INSPECTION
■ Check short to battery in harness
1.
IG “OFF” and disconnect the P/S pressure sensor connector and ECM connector.
2.
Measure the resistance between signal and power terminals of P/S pressure sensor harness connector.
Approx. 0V

3.
Is the measured resistance within specification?

img

▶ Go to “Component Inspection” procedure.

img

▶ Repair short to battery in harness
COMPONENT INSPECTION
■ Check P/S pressure sensor
1.
IG “OFF” and connect the GDS.
2.
Connect the probe to signal line of P/S pressure sensor and select the oscilloscope in menu.
3.
Check the waveform with steering handle movement after engine start.

4.
Is the measured waveform of P/S pressure sensor normal?

img

▶ Substitute with a known – good ECM and check for proper operation. If the problem is corrected, replace ECM and go to “Verification of Vehicle Repair” procedure.

There is a memory reset function on GDS that can erase optional parts automatically detected and memorized by ECM. Before or after testing ECM on the vehicle, use this function to reuse the ECM on the others.
